Yoga mats have only come into use in the last 30 or so years.  Before the 1970’s people did not use yoga mats.    I for one am thankful for them because they make the practice of yoga a lot more comfortable. 

There are also long yoga mats for those who are very tall.   An extra 2 or more inches on a mat can make a world of difference so if you are over 6 feet tall make sure you get the extra inches.

You may also want to consider a yoga mat bag for keeping your mat nicely rolled.   A bag is nice for show but a strap is also just as good for keeping the mat rolled up when not in use.
